If your doctor is talking to you about having a membrane sweep, also called a membrane strip or stretch and sweep, you need to watch this video. When it comes to answering your question, “How is labor induced?”, there are so many ways to do it and you should be confident in your answer to “Should I get induced?”. In this video, you learn about one method for how to induce labor and what questions to ask about induction, specifically when it comes to getting your membranes swept. This way, you are not caught off guard in the final weeks of pregnancy when doctors often start bringing this topic up, especially if you are planning a hospital birth.

Knowing what a membrane sweep is, how and when it is performed, and how it can lead to an induced labor and delivery (but not necessarily always), you will be able to work with your care team to know if an induction labor is the best decision for you using a Membrane Sweep.

Understanding and executing sweeps can be a tricky thing in the beginning…and well after, too. These are possibly the most important sweeps to learn early on, partly because the remain useful and highpercentage, and partly because the are rich in principles that govern all sweeping techniques.

There are multiple variations of these, and hundreds of sweeps from various guards. I focus in this video on these closed guard sweeps only:

1. Elevator Sweep
2. Hip Bump Sweep
3. Scissor Sweep
4. Pendulum Sweep

These are great sweeps by themselves or when combined with each other, other sweeps or certain complementary submissions.
