What is UPnP — also known as Universal Plug and Play? What does UPnP do? Can it compromise your online privacy and security? All about it — in this video, which will cover a huge cybersecurity vulnerability in UPnPenabled routers.
In this video, you’ll find:
00:15 What is UPnP?
00:39 LAN and WAN
00:54 The benefits and dangers of UPnP
All your home devices connected to your router create the Local Area Network — or LAN. Everything outside LAN is the Wider Area Network, also known as WAN. Usually, external devices from WAN can’t access devices on LAN unless you let them via port forwarding.
But UPnP allows apps and other devices on LAN to open and close ports automatically to connect with each other. So UPnPenabled devices can join a network automatically. But this convenience opens the door to various cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
UPnP doesn’t use authorization or authentication — it assumes that devices trying to connect are trustworthy. That’s how hackers can find backdoors into your network. Cybercriminals can discover your router on WAN and pretend to be your device to gain access to your home network. Once inside hackers can get remote access to other gadgets or install malware on your devices.
That’s why we recommend you disable UPnP, unless it’s necessary for your home network.
NordVPN is the world’s leading VPN provider and a flagship service of Nord Security. We aim to provide internet users with all the necessary online security tools.
What is a VPN? VPN is short for virtual private network. It’s a service that protects online activity and changes IP address and virtual location.
How VPN works and how to use it
It’s amazingly easy! NordVPN is available on every major platform: Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and Linux. Subscribe to the service and download the app of your choice. Then open the app and click on any location on the map (or simply tap Quick Connect). NordVPN offers over 5000 servers in 59 countries, so you’ll have plenty of locations to choose from. NordVPN will route all your internet traffic through that remote server, and this process will encrypt your online activity as well as change your IP address and virtual location.
That’s it! You can use NordVPN on 6 devices at the same time. You can also set it up on your router and secure all the devices connected to your home network. NordVPN is key for your online safety — it’s that necessary extra layer of protection when going online.

Programmatically Open External Ports with UPNP
Allow External Access to WebServer in a Local Area Network with Upnp
Upnp is a technology that allows external traffic to connect to an internal server. It is extremely useful for cases where the server is behind a router and is listening on private IP address such as 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1 or 172 which are not addressable in the Internet. Use cases are peer to peer and webRTC
In this video I’ll show how we a client in a local area network can ask the routers that support upnp to open an external port.
brew install miniupnpc
upnpc a 192.168.254.10 2222 7777 tcp
upnpc d 7777 tcp

CallStranger: Another UPnP Vulnerability (Overview)
Most of us are aware that hackers and malicious groups may try to steal your information online. But did you know they also may be able to coopt your home devices to participate in attacks?
Universal Plug and Play, or UPnP, allows devices and gadgets to find one another. While this may be convenient, it is also very dangerous for your online privacy.
Don’t want your printer to hacked? Disable UPnP on your network! In this video, Ricky breaks down the CallStranger vulnerability that affects the universalplugandplay protocol.
Here at Cyberspatial we strive to help everyone secure themselves online. If you have family or friends that are not aware of these threats, send them this video so they can protect themselves online!

UPnP – Universal Pwn n Play
by Martin Zeiser
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is one of the most widely deployed protocols, being part of just about every embedded system nowadays, included in routers, smart TVs, printers, projectors, gaming consoles, NAS and many more. By design and intention, UPnP is intended as a handsoff approach to autoconfiguration. It allows operating systems to communicate with supported devices, detect their abilities and interfaces and read as well as modify settings or execute functions. The lack of security on the one hand combined with a plethora of different features implemented by thousands of vendors makes for a rich attack surface. While mostly aimed at home networks, many UPnP enabled devices made it into office networks and provide their services on the internal networks, sometimes even the Internet, without anyone being aware.

Xbox Open NAT TYPE – DMZ, UPnP : Fix For Honor Connections Problems, Issues & Errors
How to open nat for xbox one: A For Honor Case Study
For Honor is the latest gaming sensation among players, but it’s P2P connectivity issues are certainly frustrating xbox gamers, and your nat type may be the culprit.
Today we are going to show you how to fix for honor multiplayer issues on your end by setting your xbox nat type to open. The 3 NAT types on XBOX are Open, Moderate, or Strict Nat Types, and the last 2 WE DON’T WANT!
Some of you may even encounter the xbox nat type unavailable error.
Having an open nat is mission critical for gamers, especially in Peer 2 Peer games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and For Honor!
How To Open Xbox Nat Type 3:44
Now I am going to give a little back story and logic for those who want to understand NAT settings and it’s implications on gaming, for those who just want to get straight to the tutorial, there is a time jump link in the description below! But I think you should just watch the whole damn thing!
Anyways I’m going to talk a little about my experience with for honor and show you how to get an open nat on your xbox one for the best online multiplayer experience coming right up after the break!
Before we can set an open nat type for your xbox we need to understand what and why!
What is a NAT Type?
Network Address Translation or NAT is a way of remapping IP address spaces. In addition to easing traffic routing, it also obscures IP addresses using IP masquerading which allows for an increased level of protection when online. Think of it as a mask per’se But when you are gaming and a peer or server is sending information to and from, it’s best you take off YOUR MASK , or make sure your NAT is open so that the server or swarm knows exactly who you are and who to send the data to!
If everyone is wearing a mask the DATA is like OK where the hell do I GO? YOU ALL LOOK ALIKE ? And this is why a lot of us lose connection on multiplayer because the data starts playing a very calculated game of Guess who and it rather not!
With for honor as our case study. How could such a brutally satisfying, barbaric, graphically beautiful, sadistic game come with such a horrible multiplayer experience ?
Ubisoft confirmed prior to the game’s launch that For Honor’s networking model is not a dedicated server, and it doesn’t rely on the connection of a single player to host a game.
Rather, it’s matches are hosted using the connections of all players, think swarm connection like when you download torrents… Now if you are all sitting on strict nats (wearing a mask)… you’re basically just playing pong with your data packets, 1 vs 1 shouldn’t be a problem, but 4 vs 4 like in for honor and the data packets don’t know where to go. Unless your nat is open
Look it guys, moderate and strict nats are not how we game, but we overlook it quite often, I mean P2P get’s along with NAT like HeMan get’s along with Skeletor, Voltron get’s along with Gulra, Trumps hair get’s along with him!
SO LET’S FIX THIS CRAP SHALL WE
With DMZ and UPNP
